Murder by Numbers star Agnes Bruckner headlines this sequel to the tense, 2007 horror thriller about a lonely motel that's wired for terror. When Caleb, his new fiancée Jessica, and their wisecracking friend Tanner checked into the Meadow View Inn, they thought their scariest thing about their stay would be the tacky décor. But folks who check into this motel are never heard from again, because the sadistic Mr. Smith and his murderous accomplices have a habit of murdering their guests on camera and turning the tapes for a tidy profit. When Caleb, Jessica, and Tanner fall into Mr. Smith's diabolical trap, their only hope for survival is to fight though the night and become as brutal as their attackers. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Vacancy 2: The First Cut is a surprisingly good follow up to the original. Thats not to say it's a great movie, because it's not, it's just better than you'd expect. Let's be realistic, it's a low budget direct to video horror movie that clocks in at 85 minutes. How great can it be? On the bright side, it does a good job of playing on your fears - that you are being taped when you have sex in a hotel room and those tape are sold on the black market. CREEPY! Then the taping turns dark and they decide to venture into the more profitable snuff film making. Very effective. I thought the acting was pretty good for a horror movie and the story was solid. What I didn't like is the waste of the R rating. Everything is very dark, the blood is barely visible. the sex tapes are all with clothes on. We all watch horror movies for a reason. I hate an R rated movie that wimps out on the horror content. It's cheap.

As a prequel should, "Vacancy 2" helps explain the events leading to the first "Vacancy" movie. So the story is okay. The acting is okay. But this is pretty standard horror stuff and the "R" rating is for the violence; it can't be for anything else. I know it's a nighttime setting, but it's so dark, blood is barely visible. The snuff tapes are all with clothes on. You watch horror movies for a reason. There's no reason to watch this one.
