Aria is an outstanding slice of life anime that follows Akari Mizunashi as she trains to become a gondolier in Neo-Venezia, a replica of Venice on the planet Aqua (terraformed Mars). Aria is mesmerizing and draws you in to its beautifully drawn and animated world. Every episode is truly outstaning and makes you want to see more. The animation, writing, voice-acting and music are all brilliant, making Aria truly one of the best anime of all-time. Very highly recommended.
The animation itself is very good and will generally remind you of Ah, My Goddess. The stories are quite lyrical, focusing on aspects of day-to-day life that reinforce an overall tone of beauty, quiet happiness, and relaxation that seem to be the motivating points of the series. While well done, however, the story lacks to spiritual meaning of Mushishi, a series that can transport and teach, or the character direction of a Kiki's Delivery Service, which presents both a beautiful place and people, and a moving and meaningful story. The story is completely non-violent and was probably originally aimed at and highly appropriate for teenage girls around 12-16, but will probably not interest older viewers.
