Clark Gable is "Big John" and Spencer Tracy is "Square John"; both "Johns" seek their fortunes in the Texas oil fields. They simultaneously fall in love with Claudette Colbert, but it's "Big John" who wins out. When both Johns grow rich on oil, "Big John" lets money go to his head, and he begins neglecting wife Colbert for Hedy Lamarr, the "been around" companion of businessman Lionel Atwill. "Square John", who still carries a torch for Colbert but doesn't want to see her heart broken, tries to buy off Lamarr; when this fails, he decides to ruin "Big John" financially. But when "Big John" is charged with violating anti-trust rules by the crooked Atwill, "Square John" rushes to the side of his old pal. Both men end up where they started--broke but happy. "Big John" returns to faithful Colbert, while "Square John" stands by with an ear-to-ear grin. Boom Town was the last film to co-star Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy; though Tracy was fond of Gable, he resented playing "eunuch" in their on-screen romantic triangles. Claudette Colbert's scenes with Clark Gable are pleasant enough, but the sparks that had ignited their scenes in It Happened One Night are largely absent here. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Gable and Lamarr are two of the most gorgeous, charismatic people ever to light up a screen. Colbert is pure class even in an oilfield. The young Tracy is as stalwart as he would be in all his pictures. And Frank Morgan--the perfect flim-flam man good at heart, just as he was in the Wizard of Oz of the previous year, 1939. You might not be thrilled by the superficial plot, but this bit of Hollywood fakery in its golden years is irresistible.

I rented this movie because I am a big Hedy Lamarr fan. The cast is great. However, I found this movie to be very boring!

No, the characters DON'T simultaneously fall in love w/ Colbert's character -- Tracy IS in love with her & Gable's character unwittingly steals it.! Mistaken summaries such as the one for this GREAT movie, by the way, set my teeth on edge! There's no CONTEST between the two simultanesouly! Tracy is phenomenal in his role as Square John while Gable's portrayal as Big John is brash and energetic as he usually exudes in roles such as in "San Francisco" .. a loveable, brash rascal of sorts Colbert is unfortunately lett to play the ladylike, helpless heroine & feminine figure popular in the 40's & 50's .. so isn't allowed much room to um..flex her talent muscles any more than in other films. Hedy Lamar is convincingly purrfect in her stalking, slitherly role as a marriage breaker over Big John. Alas, Square John is just well, square, but solid! Wonderful casting, great story & energy -- but unableto break molds of the era they were lived in - however, fantastically entertaining.
