Ferocious Female Freedom Fighters (1982)

Ferocious Female Freedom Fighters (1982)
Member Rating:
The folks at Troma Pictures have served up a variation on a theme previously plunked out in Woody Allen's What's Up Tiger Lily. Ferocious Female Freedom Fighters is the American title of a 1982 Indonesian martial-arts epic. Rather than merely translate the dialogue into English, the Troma folks brought in members of the LA Connection, a comedy troupe specializing in providing old movies with new, satirical soundtracks. Thus the female-wrestler protagonists in Ferocious Female Freedom Fighters crack wise about their hang-ups, make constant obscure pop-cultural references, and spout out non sequiturs at the least appropriate moments. The many throwaway gags include references to the First Church of Muhammad Ali and the Wrestleholics Geographical Nomenclature Match. It's parasitical humor, to be sure, and funny as all get out. Less amusing was the follow-up Ferocious Female Freedom Fighters II, which evinced signs of a good idea wearing very thin. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
