Young people in modern day Paris in love, dealing with life's troubles and the slings and arrows of outrageous.... is the substance of this film. French musical movie is the genre, and this film delivers on this better than anything I've seen since Umbrellas at Cherborg! The songs enhance the emotional tone, adding depth and giving the characters a dimensionality the mere story, rich as it is, does not allow. And the love scene near film's end between a Brit gay boy and our very French, omnisexual main male character is a truly delicious bit of film making. Don't miss this. But if movie musicals are not your thing, give this a chance! The English subtitles deserve mention because they maintain a veracity to the original French while conveying the poetry in the musical numbers. A real sleeper!!
The cover, most descriptions and even the trailer in trying to avoid spoilers understandably distort the plot. There are two distinct phases of the movie, bridged by the emotional and romantic toils of Ismael. The contrast between his competitive (almost combative) relationship with Julie, which although loving requires a threesome with Alice to maintain equilibrium, and his blossoming romance with tender Erwann provide the movie's core. And the music, a blend of coffee-house ballad and pop song, perfectly complements the emotional rawness of the screenplay. Although voice performances are competent and suit the register and tone of the music, the delicate and often breathy delivery disguises the uniqueness of the actors' voices, rendering them all but indistinguishable. Overall, "Love Songs" is unexpectedly sweet and romantically poignant, concluded with the most appropriately bittersweet line possible.
The twists in movie really captured the viewers attention. I felt anxious to see what would happen next. It was so moving how the family cared so deeply for Ismael & Alice. It was touching how the movie took you to so many different ways a relationship can go. Touching your heart with each emotion..left you wanting for more.
