The directorial debut of horrormeister John Carpenter comes in the way of Dark Star a parody of Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, 2001--A Space Odyssey. The story follows four hippyish techno-nerds in their mission through deep space to destroy planets and ward off boredom and loneliness as they attempt to hold on to what little they can remember of Earth. When their weapons system malfunctions, they are forced to deal with a "smart" bomb trapped in the launching mechanism, and the acting captain must debate phenomenology with the device in order to dissuade it from destroying them all. The film also features an imaginative and amusing struggle between one crew member and an inflatable alien he attempts to keep as a pet, a long reflection on the virtues of surfing, a series of personality struggles, and a cryogenically-frozen captain whose brain is preserved on computer for the purpose of consultation. ~ Jeremy Beday, Rovi

This movie is the type of off beat comedy that a lot of people hate, it has low level special effects even for it's time but is still fun to watch today.

Gotta luv it. If you're the kind that has to take every movie you watch seriously than you won't like it. Otherwise, grab a beer, prop your feet up and get ready for a chuckle. I was cheering for the alien. My kind of guy. And the arguments between the crew and the talking bomb had me rolling on the floor.

It's worth watching for the music alone, not to mention the subplots about Pinback and his pet alien, or his story of how he came to be on the mission, or his secret recording, or the petty rivalry onboard, or the special effects, ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, or the crewmembers' quarters, strewn with pizza boxes and overflowing ashtrays, or the discussion of phenomenology (in a logical positivist or empiricist sense) between the bomb and the acting captain, or that man's reminiscence about surfing. I admit it was slow to start. I fell asleep twice and had to restart it twice, but when I saw how it all came together in the end, I was stunned! And the parts that were added in as filler in order to make the movie long enough for commercial production fit perfectly. I rank this as one of the very, very, very few movies I have ever seen worth watching more than once. If you can watch this movie all the way through and pay attention and still not like it, I feel sorry for you.
