As a hard science fiction fan for nearly sixty years I like intelligent, innovative and thought provoking stories. The original authors of these stories may well have been masters of SciFi but the script writers and directors were not. The three I watched were labored, tedious, mundane development ending with a twist that was hardly worth the wait even if it was mildly surprising and not obvious from the first scenes. In contrast are a couple of independent films that I felt were much more effective with a complete absence of special effects: The Penitent Man is a lovely, fresh, multi layered exploration of time travel paradoxes with pleasingly simple devices. It is a little uneven but the good spots are well worth the awkward ones. Another fresh, no special effects SciFi movie is Freaky Faron which I found pleasantly plausible.
