British filmmaker Terence Davies pays homage to the city of his birth in this visual essay on the seaside town of Liverpool. Described by Davies as "a love song and a eulogy," Of Time and the City uses vintage home movies and newsreel footage to paint a portrait of the Liverpool he knew as a child, a tough working-class community where decay and resilience walked side by side, even as many of the efforts to "improve" Liverpool in the '60s accomplished little beyond robbing it of its character and rough-hewn beauty. Combining a variety of found images with music and poetry, Of Time and the City explores how this slow evolution of Liverpool impacted the people who lived there, and how the people also became part of the city's ups and downs. Of Time and the City was screened as a special presentation at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This was not a "fun" nor entertaining movie, however, it WAS very powerful and the footage was sobering. This film provides a look at a city most of us in the U.S. have never even thought about, let alone personally experienced. Seeing how crowded, busy and inspired the city had been in the past, and then evolved into a state so many of us experience living in urban America (decay, graffiti, and overall abandonment) dramatically presented a city we should grieve for, as we should many of our own. The use of color, readings, and music significantly contributed to this powerful experience. Ultimately, while thrilled with the quality of the film, I was depressed (not only for Liverpool, but for those of us caught up in similar conditions).

What a lovely, lyrical movie. A city most of us in the U.S. never thought about, Carol A.? Only if you're too young to remember the Beatles! Imagine a movie like this made about Detroit or New York. It'd have to be at least twice as long, and in the case of the former, twice as depressing. But think how impoverished the world would be if John, Paul, George and Ringo had been so content with Liverpool, they'd never have left it!
