Member Rating:
A man struggles to understand and accept both himself and others in this pastoral drama from Czech filmmaker Bohdan Sláma. Petr (Pavel Liska) is a schoolteacher who has grown tired of life in Prague and wants out of his dead-end relationship with another man. Petr is still coming to terms with his sexuality, and he decides to take a job in a small farming community where he can start his life over. As Petr settles into his new teaching position, he strikes up a friendship with his neighbors -- a ruggedly independent single woman, Marie (Zuzana Bydzovská), and her handsome teenage son, Lada (Ladislav Sedivý). Petr gains a new lease on life in the country, but his simple life becomes profoundly difficult when he finds himself increasingly attracted to Lada, while Marie makes it clear she has strong feelings for Petr. This is a story of a gifted young teacher who leaves a good job in Prague to go a small country school to teach science and nature studies to children who have had nothing but bad teachers prior to that. No one can figure out why he would leave the city for bad pay and worse accommodations, but he has a deep, dark secret that is later revealed and brings him problems later on. The story is draggy in places and the character is stilted and a bit tortured, but still worth watching. Other characters in the village are interesting.

A very understated view of a sad teacher, whose move to the Czech countryside fails to bring him any happiness. Although I tried again and again to focus on the story, I found my attention drifting away.

The contrast between the backward farm life of the Czech Republic with the use of cell phones and computers seemed out of sync. The cast did not behave as if they were in this century. Petr, a man with a low self-esteem and guilt ridden about his homosexual feelings, was pathetic. Lada, a teen that needed more than pulling a new born out of a cow, and Marie who was a simple drudge should have done more than help him pull. This is what they watch at the international film festival?
