Anthony Warrior of God (2006)
Member Rating:
The story of the would-be Portuguese nobleman who rejected a life of materialism to become a Franciscan monk and stand up for the poor and oppressed comes to the big screen in this lavish hagiography starring Jordi Molla, Joe Capalbo, and Matt Patresti. Had he wanted, St. Anthony (Molla) could have lived a life of leisure. Though born to Portuguese nobles, the pious St. Anthony left it all behind in order to become a symbol of hope for the downtrodden and disadvantaged. His mind was sound, but his body was fragile, and as St. Anthony began his tireless campaign against injustice, Folco (Paolo De Vita) became his most trusted disciple. When greedy money lender Ronaldo (Damir Todorovic) used his wealth to enslave the desperate people of Padua, the revolutionary saint made a vow to defend the common people even if it meant taking the fight to the highest levels of society and the church. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I have read several books on the life of St. Anthony, this is not his real story. There are some facts in it: for instance, he did travel throughout Italy. He did preach to the Cathari , and he was kind to the poor, and he was an amazing preacher who converted many. But this movie does not do him justice at all. He was so much greater and more humble and sweet than this movie represents. He was so sweet Babt Jesus used to come to him while he read the Bible and sit on the Bible and caress Anthony's face and talk to him. St. Anthony was a great miracle worker and they don't show hardly any. The preaching they show is not note worthy. When in reality St. Anthony was such a great speaker for God that he was called the "hammer of the Heritics" and only his tonge was perfectly preserved. THIS IS NOT A CHILD FRIENDLY MOVIE! The content of the peoples sins is very adult. Not reccommened to teach children about St. Anthony.

This was pretty good. I wish it were better, but it will introduce the life of this great Saint to a lot of people that are not familiar. I would have liked them to focus more on some of his sermons and miracles.

I am not by any means as familiar with St. Anthony's story as are some people. There was not as much emphasis put on his ministry in Padova (Padua in English) as I think there should have been, to show how much he cared and how it came to be that his crusade there set the people free, and even led the worst usurer and his wife to repentance. Anothny was a thorn in the side of the Church, as were Francis of Assisi, Bridget of Sweden, and many other saints. Yet he had the last laugh. Only in very exceptional cases does the Catholic Church canonize anyone a saint within 50 years, and in Anthony's case, it took only 11 months.
