Zatoichi, the blind swordsman embodies all of the basic formulas you stiil find in today's westerns; The lone outlaw with a virtous heart fighting the battle of good and evil within his soul. His tragic foe, the hired gun whose fate is alredy sealed by a terminal illness. The mutual admiration between the two foes that leads to a deep friendship. The evetual confrontation leading to a sad moralistic ending where war becomes a no-win situation. This formula has been used over the years in everything from Clint Eastwood Spaghetti weterns to Shakesperean tragedies. Like the Seven Samurai (aka. The Magnificent Seven) this formula lives on today (check out 3:10 To Yuma) and will probably continue for years to come.

With anticipation! His sword rarely comes out, but the story and acting are so great that when he whips it out, man! It really is a fantastic story and the character or Zatoichi is so cool...you see the swordfighting in this movie and realize that all that swashbuckling crap of back and forth half hour fights really are just that, crap. Rent this and see the real thing!

He is the unlikely James Bond of post shogunate Japan. Not for the fan of the 30 minute sword duel.
