Zatoichi vs. Yojimbo (1970)
Member Rating:
In Zatoichi vs. Yojimbo, one of many Japanese samurai films starring the blind swordsman Zatoichi (Shintaro Katsu), he has to battle Yojimbo (Toshiro Mifune), the title character from Akira Kurosawa's famous film. At the beginning of the film, Zatoichi is planning on retiring, yet his village is besieged by outlaws; eventually he fights, then befriends Yojimbo on his way to securing his village. The movie is a light-hearted parody of samurai films and a comic take on the genre, boasting a wonderfully funny performance from Mifune. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

So Sanjuro, the Yojimbo, was always a secret agent? I lived in Japan for many years and the blind Samurai films were a mainstay of Saturday afternoon at the cinema...... This had its moments..but was too long by 40 minutes..... Stick with Yojimbo......and find another Zato-Ichi.....this isn't there best. Mifune spends most of the film doing a bad drunk...and Katsu mugs even beyond typical Samurai-movie boundaries.

If you haven't ever seen a zatoichi movie - this one is pretty good. Lots of inside jokes for those of you niponfiles - but even my hubby, who isn't familiar with this genre liked this movie. Zatoichi is such a great everyman of a character. ok - an everyman who is blind and an amazing swordsman. Unlike the title, this does not play off the movie Zatoichi - though the concept of the 2 warring bosses is similar. Toshiro's character isn't the same yojimbo as in the movie - Yojimbo. But still, a good movie and good introduction to the character of Zatoichi.

This is truely a classic of Japanese Samurai fiction! Has great translations in the subtitles, which can be difficult to find in pre-90's Japanese cinema. The story is well written the charracters are well engineered and the the plot is consistent without being overly complex as some Japanese cinema has a tendancy to become. Highly recommended for anyone who is a long time fan, or just as an introduction to Japanese Samurai fiction.
