Best known for his 1978 film The Deer Hunter or perhaps the less-successful Heaven's Gate, director Michael Cimino turned to this fast-paced actioner set in an authentic (back lot) Chinatown. This thriller stars a rogue Polish-American cop (Mickey Rourke) out to not only keep Chinatown safe for the local consumers, but to dismantle its deep-rooted crime and drug cartels as well. No one backs the crusading cop in the latter objective, and as he faces a suave and wily crime boss (John Lone of The Last Emperor) and a libidinous newscaster (Ariane), he may be taking on more than he can handle.     I love the 80's. I'll watch a Mickey Rourke film any day. Don't know what they paid him, but this film is terrible. Bad script, bad plot, better to avoid.

    Oliver Stone's script is tired and winey with its heavy references to Vietnam and the establishment. Mickey Rourke turns a respectable performance with limited script, although his choice to were a 40's hat is simply ridiculous. The actress, Ariane -- if that is what you call her, is miseable. Regrettabley she appears in "King of New York" and is equally uninspiring and weak. The film, like this review, is considerably too long and is by no means a measure against Cinimo's graceful and poetic "Deer Hunter." Anyway, long, dated and boring -- not worth watcihing at all.
