Member Rating:
Quand Tu Descendras du Ciel director Eric Guirado follows up his feature filmmaking debut with this drama about a grocer's son who returns to the village where he was born in order to take over his father's business. Ten years ago, Antione (Nicolas Cazalé) left his family behind and moved to the big city. Now, after discovering that his father (Daniel Duval) has suffered a heart attack and that the family grocery store will soon be forced to shut down, Antoine heads back to the French mountain town at the behest of his brother François (Stéphan Guérin-Tillié). It seems that few folks save for his mother (Jeanne Goupil) are happy to see Antoine return, though the meandering 30-year-old has brought city friend Claire (Clotilde Hesme) along to keep him company during his stay in the country. Though it remains to be seen whether Antoine and Claire will ever become anything more than friends, the free-spirited sprite is more than happy to help out when it comes to making the rounds with the mobile store that services the local villages. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The first few minutes of "The Grocer's Son" almost made me eject the film. Antoine, the film's central character, is so negative and unappealing at the start! But I stuck with the film, and before long, the mood changed. Unsuccessful in his Parisian waiter's job, Antoine then has to return home to help his difficult father with his rural grocery business. Part of this involves driving a huge van along the back roads of Provence, serving an elderly clientele who initially drive him crazy. Then they befriend each other. Of course, romance is also involved. The film turns out to be very enjoyable.

As a previous reviewer said, this is a film you really need to stick with. Antoine is really not a very likeable guy... but the story has a realness to it few movies have. Not for those with a short attention span, but it rewards you with a great story and beautiful cinematography if you give it a chance.

As Ann C. and Jim S. noted, this is a movie that grows on you as you come to know the characters. And as well as presenting beautiful scenes of the French countryside, it also offers an interesting look into the daily lives of people in this rural environment.
