NOT GAY is a compilation of four short films exploring the joys and frustrations of gay/straight friendships. The compilation includes The Best Men by Tony Wei, Float by Kareem Mortimer, Cowboy Forever by Jean-Baptiste Erreca, Katydid by Scott Boswell. The Best Men -- Tony Wei, 2006, 13 min., USA -- Peter is going to be the best man at his childhood best friend's wedding. Meeting the night before, it is clear they have unsaid feelings for each other, but neither can fully express themselves. Peter looks on the next day as the wedding continues, consoled by the groom's sister and mother. Cowboy Forever -- Jean-Baptiste Erreca, 2006, 27 min., France -- Fictionalized from a true story, this docu-drama takes us on a journey through Brazil's Matto Gross do Sul and into the lives of Brazilian gauchos. Beautifully shot landscapes form the backdrop for a simple story of friendship and tolerance between Govinda and John, as Govinda explores his attraction to his fellow cowboy.
Ed. M.'s review is a good synopsis except he didn't describe "Katydid" (see item 4 below). This is 4 short films: 1) "The Best Men" is a badly acted, tired story. 2) "Float" is scenic, poorly acted, and unconvincing. 3) "Cowboy Forever" also scenic, good story but is badly narrated and amateurishly acted. 4) "Katydid" is quite funny. One brother is angry and arguing with the other brother for stealing his girlfriends. When the offended brother discovers the other brother is actually gay and not stealing girlfriends the argument gets hysterically funny! Actor Jesse Schoem plays both brothers brilliantly. It's a real shame this little gem, "Katydid" is in lost in bad company in this short film collection. Although, I may rent this again just for the one story.
