You've seen Hollywood's version of this remarkable tale, now take the opportunity to look behind the scenes and find out how boisterous Texas congressman Charlie Wilson and aggressive CIA operative Gust Avrakotos (aka "Dr. Dirty") really armed the Afghan Mujahideen in the most expansive campaign in CIA history. The effects of Wilson and Avrakotos' efforts are still being felt around the globe nearly two decades after the fact, making their story as relevant in the new millennium as it was when they first began plotting together back in the 1980s. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Some parts of this story are really scary (like how much influence one congressman can have on foreign affairs), but many parts are really inspiring (like how big a difference one person can make for people on the other side of the world). I previously saw Charlie Wilson's War, the movie based on this true story, and enjoyed it. However, Tom Hanks is always Tom Hanks, and I didn't especially like Julia Roberts' dry interpretation of Joanne Herring. The best part of this documentary is getting to hear the story from the real Charlie Wilson and Joanne Herring.

Truly a very poorly made documentary by the discovery channel. Its just an adulatory exercise in delusion that we like to live in. Nothing about the disaster inflicted by creating Islamic terrorists that attracted jihadist from all the Muslim world that we and the rest of the world are having to face. One would think that after 9/11 we would at least finally make an effort to look inwards to see what we have created, but self delusion continues. This while our country is mired in wars and financial upheaval, the causes of which, to this day we have not properly been ascertained by Discovery channel or for that matter any channel. I guess a hundred years from now the future generations are going to lament the foolishness of this generation. Don't see it happening anytime soon though, instead see more of this type of Hollywood fiction passing off as documentary.
