Blind Date (2008)

Blind Date (2008)
Member Rating:
A married couple deal with a crushing loss in a way that's both funny and deeply sad in this comedy-drama from director, screenwriter and star Stanley Tucci. Don (Tucci) and his wife Janna (Patricia Clarkson) meet every night in the same shabby nightclub where Don performs a humorously shambolic magic act. Don and Janna's relationship has been on the verge of collapse since the death of their daughter, and they're trying to reconnect with each other through role playing, so each evening they pretend they're meeting for the first time on a blind date after discovering one another through personal ads. Sometimes they assume characters that are openly confrontational, while other times they try to bring a sweetness and intimacy back into their lives, but more often than not their struggle to reclaim the love they knew ends in confusion and frustration. Blind Date was adapted by Tucci and screenwriter David Schechter from Theo Van Gogh's 1996 film of the same name; it was the second in a series of remakes of Van Gogh's films (following Steve Buscemi's Interview) created in response to Van Gogh's assassination by political extremists in 2004. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

It was boring at beginning, but as I continuous to watch, I found the movie deeply sad as how couples deal and cope with a loss of their child. I am always believed Stanley Tucci is a good actor and now also good director; it is outstanding way to expressing the feeling of loss. THE LOSS OF A CHILD IS THE GREATEST LOSS OF ALL.

While the idea of a married couple going on blind dates is an intriguing one, this movie does little to explore the possibilities. The couple is simply not very interesting, and the dialogue seems strained and forced. While Patricia Clarkson does a fine acting job, as usual, Stanley Tucci is simply not fit for this part as an actor and his skills as a director are minimal. I found him just so repulsive - from the beginniing, where he licks his fingers onstage in his magic act and then puts things down the front of his pants for women in the audience to take, to the middle, where we are confronted with him shirtless. Please, Mr. Tucci, keep your shirt on! I don't know where you got the idea you're a look good shirtless, but, let me assure you, you are not. I ididn't make it to the end of this movie: I was both bored and disgusted.

Interesting concept & dialogue...but executed with a dismal style. Truly depressing & did not care what happened to either lead. Would never recommend this movie.
