NOVA: Judgement Day - Intelligent Design on Trial (2007)
Member Rating:
At a time when Darwin's theory of evolution is continually being challenged by proponents to Intelligent Design, the award-winning filmmakers at Nova explores the concept of evolution and ask whether or not Intelligent Design is truly a valid scientific alternative by examining the public uproar that erupted when science teachers in Dover, Pennsylvania public schools were asked to read a letter stating that life was too complex to have evolved as Darwin hypothesized. When the teachers refused to read the letter and banned together with parents to file a federal lawsuit accusing the school board of violating the constitutional separation of church and state, the resulting trial sent lawyers and expert witnesses scrambling. In this documentary, the case of Kitzmiller v. Dover School District is covered through reenactments based on actual court transcripts, as well as interviews conducted with key participants and actual scientists. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

whether you like the verdict or not, it's a good summary of the events and arguments. the heart of the debate hinged around science being an ongoing process, and this sheds a lot of light on that distinction. It was a refreshing program that avoided the usual tired rhetoric from both sides. Extra points for showing the irony how ID lost largely because evolution of their school book (and it's transitional "fossils") showed it was really about getting dogma into Science class, and there was no actual scientific motive behind it.

This is a good presentation of the Intelligent Design vs. Darwinism in education debate. While it is extremely unfortunate the way the trial turned out, the basic premise that Darwinism is only a THEORY and should be TAUGHT AS SUCH is emphasized throughout the presentation by the ID side. If the Spontaneous Generation people ('way back when) had been the only voices in science education, we'd still think that flies spring spontaneously from ripe meat.
