Most of this movie is in German with English subtitles but that does not detract from the power of the terrible events that are built up to. It is near the end of WWII and Germany is reeling on two fronts. Dresden is a beautiful city that remains one of the only major locations not bombed. A British pilot is shot down and ends up in a German hospital on the outskirts of Dresden and is hidden by the daughter of the hospital's heads doctor. A relationship ensues. Meanwhile, Stalin pressures Churchill to "send a message" to Germany by obliterating a city. Dresden is handpicked because it has so many wooden structures and narrow streets. The firebombing ensures and over 20,000 people die. in 2 nights. It is perhaps the worst bombing raid to occur in Europe during the war. The end of the movie brings hope and closure to a terrible event.

A superlative foreign film fraught with drama and emotion. An inside view of everyday life in the Third Reich--the good, bad and the ugly. Superior acting, lush photography, suspense and human interest. Highy recommended. (Keep in mind that this is a 2-disc film).

If Blockbuster hadn't offered this movie, I probably would have never seen it. It IS a superlative film! As in real life, the performers use both English (in scenes with British airmen) and German (in the Dresden sections). Significant reconstruction has now taken place in Dresden and the Elbe Region, and it has become a World Heritage Site. But still, major treasures were lost forever in the 1940s catastrophe: human lives, art, architecture, etc.
