When a Russian youth is put on trial for the murder of his adoptive father, it's up to a room full of jurors divided by racism and prejudice to determine the boy's ultimate fate in director Nikita Mikhalkov's loose remake of Reginald Rose's 12 Angry Men. At the center of the storm is a broodingly silent foreman (Mikhalkov). As the deliberation grows increasingly tense, a racist Russian cabbie (Sergei Garmash) attempts to sway the vote of a well-dressed television producer (Yuri Stoyanov) by staging a vivid recreation of a gruesome murder scene; an elderly Jewish man (Valentin Gaft) recovers the nightmares of the Holocaust; and a Caucasus surgeon (Sergei Gazarov) is pushed over the edge by a hateful rant about the brutishness of Chechens. Later, after one soft-spoken juror (Sergei Makovetsky) wins the jury over with a heartfelt monologue about intemperance and redemption, the volatile group struggles to settle on a final verdict. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This was recommended to me by a friend who was escatic about it but I held off since I am familiar with the other versions of this fine courtroom drama notably the 1957 version with Henry Fonda and the 1991 TV version with Jack Lemmon and George C. Scott. The film is very well acted but unnecessarily long due to the cutting back and forth between the jury room, the accused in his cell and the history that transpired that led to the murder which I felt added unnecessarily to this being almost 2 hrs and 40 minutes over the top. Missing is the claustrophobic tension of both versions but still it is an interesting look at the Russian judicial system. Good film but stick to the other 2 versions if the subtitles and the length bother you.

I really enjoyed this movie. It did not matter that it was 160 minutes long. Its just too bad I do not speak Russian. The lines in the movie were well thought out for the actors. Much of the movie was very thought provoking and it kept my attention. The personalities for each character were very well developed.

I thought it was amazing. Dialoge was strong and the acting was great. The boy dancing in the jail cell was hauntingly beautiful. I very much liked it and thought it was better than the american versions. However I did like them too. But this one was just better over all. But you can't pay attention to anything else while you watch or you miss the point. Not a movie to watch while you are doing other things like flding laundry which I had to stop doing:)
