The blurb here describes the movie incorrectly. The Earth has been invaded by UFOs, and the only hope of defeating them is a special project: The Gohten, a flying warship. Half of the movie deals with getting the ship completed, then the rest of the movie is largely battles between the ship and the aliens. Including invading the alien's base on Venus. The special effects are quite good. In some battles there are well over a dozen UFOs battling half a dozen fighters from the Gohten. The acting is also surprisingly good. I really wasn't expecting much from this, given most movies from Toho in the 70s looked like most of the production budget was spent on acid, not the script or special effect. But I thoroughly enjoyed it.

You can't expect exceptional special effects and technological accuracy from a movie of this type, so with that in mind. it's emjoyable. To me, the surprise was the acting and directing. The cast looked and behaved like real people, not the jerky puppets seen on other Japanase sci'fi.

Although this film shows a release date of 1977 I would wonder. Towards the end of the film there are tons of "Star Wars" like elements that go beyond coincidence. I won't go into details as I don't want to give away anything. Either way, this is a hokey low budget sci-fi flick that's fun with a bowl of popcorn and soda.
