Trip Out (2005)
Member Rating:
First-time feature filmmaker James Hausler offers a subversive take on the typical teen comedy with this hallucinogenic tale of two brothers, one sinfully delicious cheerleader, and the sexually-charged party that sets into motion a truly outlandish chain reaction. Tommy is a loaner but extrovert at heart who always seems to play second fiddle to his popular older brother Richard, while Richard's best friend Colby serves as the connecting tissue between the two disparate siblings. As the weekend approaches, domineering cheerleader Sasha begins making plans for the most erotic party in the history of their high school. Of course it doesn't take long for things to get out of hand, and as these three teenage rebels ingest a sizeable dose of hallucinogenic drugs they quickly drift into a dreamlike world populated by vindictive drug dealers and talking insects that display a rare wisdom. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

It's a quirky high-school dope/murder-spree melodrama full of amateur actors. Running time would be a third shorter if you cut out the obscene language. Three upper-middle class white HS guys -- an oily womanizer, his insanely angry brother, and an obnoxious gang-banger wannabe -- ingest some bad 'shrooms and go to a swingin' teen sex party. These guys and their buddies are possibly the vilest, most unlikeable young characters I've ever seen on screen. The misogyny on display is almost jaw-dropping in its hatefulness. Quentin Tarantino -- who the director is desperately trying to imitate -- is known for violent and sometimes nihilistic films, but at least he can do it with some flair and a sense of fun. To top it off, they try and tug your heartstrings with a sappy "tragic" ending totally out of left-field. Only redeeming feature is the music (incredibly, a full orchestral score and a few well-known pop tunes). I like quirky, independent films, but this movie is simply awful.
