I first saw this film on late night TV as a teen - it left such an impression that I sought out a British format tape before it's release here. The change in Schaffner's character - the cold-hearted hubris that leads him to he gutters of a Mexican border town, outcast and spit upon- is brought to life flawlessly by the controlled yet emotional Steiger. Watch Steiger for details of small gestures and expressions. You believe him. You feel for him. I still cry at the end. If you love the taut suspense of Greene and the emotional depth of Steiger you will want to see this many, many times over. My perfect 4.

Interesting expansion of a Graham Greene short story. Millionaire embezzler tries to steals the identity of another man, and escape to Mexico. Rod Steiger is terrific and unafraid to be unsympathetic. A solid noir feeling to the story, themes and cinematography. And a good deal of tension. On the other hand, the story depends on not just one but two whopping coincidences, along with a couple of those ˜why does the character not realize he could just do X moments, which slightly hurts the overall effectiveness of the film. The score is a bit over the top too. But, for any faults its still a well made, thinking person's thriller.

A man risks and loses his life for the only creature left on earth who loves him - his dog. And noone does this better than Rod Steiger. This film is a Steiger-sleeper. See it .
