On their way into the wilderness for a romantic weekend alone, a young couple is carjacked by a desperate escaped criminal and his devious girlfriend. Later, as the mismatched couples head ever deeper into the woods, they unknowingly become targeted by a parasitic creature that absorbs the corpses of its human victims. The situation goes from bad to worse when the four travelers seek shelter at an abandoned gas station, and the insatiable creature begins taking them over one by one. First off, the thing about horror movies is that everybody gets scared by different things. Some people find slasher flicks scary, some people get scared by aliens and such, some only get scared by paranormal/ghost movies, and some don't really ever get scared/afraid, they just get startled & jump when things pop out of nowhere. So to say this movie is or isn't scary is purely subjective, and it all depends whether this genre is your "bag o' tea." I would say it was pretty well-made, flowing nicely while keeping things from being completely predictable. I'd put this in the category of most horror movies today--substantial blood & gore, and much of the screams come when things pop out unexpectedly.

As horror movies go, this one was not especially good or horribly bad. Unremarkable in its simplicity and predictability, the most interesting thing about SPLINTER is the antagonist, which is never completely and fully explained, but is some sort of non-intelligent parasite which can track down potential hosts as long as it can detect their warmth. Interesting? Certainly. Amazing? Hardly. Once you've seen all the really good horror movies, find time for this one on a rainy night.

I loved this movie for two reasons. One, the villain/creature is nothing of the sort. Two, it's the only movie to make me jump (more than at the very end like most movies) since I was 8 when I watched The Exorcist. Even the synopsis is not very accurate. Pay attention to the scene in the cooler to realize what the thing actually is. It's definitely one of my favorites for the time being. Few movies impress me as much as this one did. Mainly for it's simplicity, and realism (if you can call a fictional creature that). Overall, I'd recommend this to any good horror collector.
