Up the Sandbox (1972)
Member Rating:
Up The Sandbox is a complex and difficult film, and it is ambiguous on many points, particularly on whether the protagonist Margaret Reynolds (Barbara Streisand) is a women's liberationist, a closet lesbian, or a masochist. Based on the novel by Anne Richardson Rolphe, it follows Margaret's attempts to tell her husband that she is pregnant with yet another child. The everyday events of her life are punctuated by numerous and complex fantasy sequences which reveal her fears and her desires. It is clear that she is afraid that she and her husband Paul (David Selby) are growing apart -- and that he may be having an affair. Despite the increasingly elaborate and frantic nature of her fantasies, her disclosure, when she finally makes it, has happy results. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Having seen other early Streisand movies ("Funny Girl", "For Pete's Sake", "The Way We Were", etc.), I decided to try this one. The story was somewhat outdated - women have more options these days, and even ones who stay at home probably know of these options. And seeing the Streisand character in one of her fantasies join what must have been a "Black Power" group in blowing up the Statue of Liberty with the World Trade Center twin towers appearing clearly in the background has got to be upsetting to everyone who has seen this movie in recent years. But I did find myself applauding when, in another fantasy, her character pushes her mother's face into a cake.

This movie was okay on occasion but overall it was confusing and long. There are alot of dream sequences and you cant tell if she is really dreaming or its a new part of the movie. There are some memorable scenes like the statue of liberty one. This seems to be a womens lib movie about the boredom of raising kids or something the easy response is dont have kids. Interesting to watch the fashion trends and a young Barbra Streisand also enjoyed watching all the old cars. I dont understand why the film looks so clear and crisp compared to modern movies?

Finally, a movie that speaks to the issues of the days in which it was conceived released. It shows how versed Barbra is - something that most current box office "stars" cannot not convey even if their lives and lively-hood depended on it....it is okay to not like the film but women didn't have many choices were in another fake war at the time and Manhattan was gritty as were most urban centers. I enjoy seeing the Twin Towers in film - films provide a record of social issues, greatnesses, and strife. They are made to move us and to make us think, and this film does it all - Barbara looks beautiful and the cast around her is just as amazing.....beautiful dreamer, la da de da!!!!
