The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988)
Member Rating:
In Philip Kaufman's surprisingly successful film adaptation of Czech author Milan Kundera's demanding 1984 best-seller, Daniel Day-Lewis stars as Tomas, an overly amorous Prague surgeon, while Juliette Binoche plays Tereza, the waiflike beauty whom he marries. Even though he's supposedly committed, Tomas continues his wanton womanizing, notably with his silken mistress Sabina (Lena Olin). Escaping the 1968 Russian invasion of Prague by heading for Geneva, Sabina takes up with another man and unexpectedly develops a friendship with Tereza. Meanwhile, Tomas, who previously was interested only in sex, becomes politicized by the collapse of Czechoslovakia's Dubcek regime. The Unbearable Lightness of Being may be too leisurely for some viewers, but other viewers may feel the same warm sense of inner satisfaction that is felt after finishing a good, long novel. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Good movie. I agree with the other reviewers that there should have a notation when ordering the movie that it is a two disk movie. That being said, the movie was not as bad to me as many of the reviewers noted. I actually like movies like this that are woven around actual historical events. I then check out a little more about the real history to educate myself. I don't mind long movies if they go somewhere, which this one did. If you don't like foreign films, then don't rent this, otherwise I think it's worth the watch.

Excellent all-around,great acting, backdrop is history of Czechoslovakkian "Spring" in Prague following Russian invasion during the 60's for those interested in a bit of history as well as a great love story, very sensual. All lead actors Binoche, Daniel Day-Lewis and Lena Olin render outstanding performances throughout. Though long, it is very engaging.
