U2: Rattle and Hum (1988)
Member Rating:
This excellent documentary follows the Irish group U2 on their concert tour of the United States in support of their seventh album Joshua Tree. The politically involved rock quartet sets their sights on American musical influences, previously ignored. They quickly immerse themselves in the musical culture with a recording session at the legendary Sun Studios in Memphis. Four tracks were recorded that ended up on their next record appropriately called Rattle And Hum. Blues Legend B.B.King adds his vocals and guitar work to Love Comes To Town, and Angel Of Harlem is a passionate tribute to the late Billie Holiday. In addition to their original material, the band covers gems from The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Jimi Hendrix. Director Phil Joanou combines black-and-white with color photography to capture the band on and off the stage. Only the band's visit to Elvis Presley's Graceland seems out of context with the rest of the feature. Although the band's reverence for Elvis and his music is evident, they are merely tourists standing on the other side of a velvet rope. Spinal Tap had a more poignant visit to the king's palace, but Rattle And Hum is still one of the best musical documentaries of all time. Both the musical and political passion of U2 is evident in every frame. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

This is an amazing movie. It is shot primarily in a beautiful black and white film, so the detail is incredible. And I have only seen the 480i quality version. The band sounds different on this tour. They are much more rock and roll driven since they are touring for the Joshua Tree album which much less produced and electronic sounding than their following albums. Therefore, this is the last point at which the band sounds better live compared to from the studio. The movie contains a variety of hits ranging from U2's start in 1980 to the Joshua Tree album and new songs that were recorded during the tour. Also included are covers of Helter Skelter and All Along The Watchtower that rival any versions ever recorded. If you are a fan of rock and roll then rent this movie for sure!

A fabulous picture that contains the greatest versions of some of the greatest songs from the greatest band in the world! This time frame of U2 is not even my favorite, I prefer the older the 80's and new stuff but I still loved it. It was a fabulous film moving, powerful, and funny in parts. If you are any kind of fan of U2 rent this immediately!
