Ugly, boring, depressing, pointless. There's not a single character worth caring about. Everyone is sex-obsessed, money-obsessed, self-obsessed. There's no sign of real love, of ideals, of ethics. The style is detached, uninvolved. Long sequences that add nothing. The entire movie could be compressed into 15 minutes and lose nothing. Had I known this was made by the same guy as Porn Theater, I would have skipped it, as I hated that, too. I think critics like him because he treats the bizarre as normal. His characters are prostitutes, male hustlers, social cripples. Don't get me wrong, I'm gay, and do not think of myself or other gays as social cripples, but the characters of both Before I Forget and Porn Theater are not typical of their culture, they are on the fringe, outcasts. If they had something interesting to say about life in general, I would have no problem watching them, but they do not.

I actually saw this movie in a little art house theatre in Greenwich Village, so I expected it to be "artsy" and offbeat, but it turned out to be odd and depressing. There was a certain trainwreck quality to the main characters that kept me watching, and the movie does touch on some ideas about aging and our fears (and realities) that make you think later on, but if I had rented this movie instead of being in a theatre watching it, I probably would not have made it to the end.
