Incredible dialogue, fast paced and snappy. The performances from Robert Mitchum and Jane Greer are excellent. Always interesting, very well photographed. William Bendix gives excellent support. A fine film noir.
Despite the packaging (and the protestations of the commentary on The Big Steal), neither of these films fit the traditional definition of film noir-they are shot mostly in the daytime, there is no femme fatale, there is no ambiguity about the "good guys," etc. The best feature is the commentary on Illegal by actress Nina Foch, who talks about the process of filmmaking in the 1950s and why films of the period are, in her words, stiff. She has wonderful insights about the process of filmmaking and its evolution.
