A man at the end of his emotional rope finally explodes, but not in a way anyone would have expected in this offbeat independent drama. Bob Maconel (Christian Slater) is a middle-aged nebbish working in an office building where few people know who he is and fewer still care. Bob has developed a seething hatred and resentment of those around him, and has taken to carrying a gun to work in the hope that one day he'll have the courage to take down some of his co-workers. However, one day another man working in the office snaps and opens fire; Bob grabs his weapon and kills the shooter, but not before the gunman wounds Vanessa (Elisha Cuthbert), a pretty girl who works there. Bob unwittingly becomes a hero, and is applauded for stopping the menace and saving Vanessa's life. However, as Bob keeps an eye on Vanessa at the hospital (where she may now be paralyzed for life), his sudden transformation in the eyes of others only leaves him more unsettled and disturbed. Also starring William H. Macy and Jamison Jones, He Was A Quiet Man received its world premiere at the 2007 South by Southwest Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Okay, this is a hard one to peg. I wouldn't say it was Good, exactly, but it was very interesting. Christian Slater does an excellent job playing Bob. This is Slater like you have NEVER seen him before. The movie states off slow, then picks up. For a low budget movie that was filmed in just 3 weeks, it wasn't all that bad. And as for Elisha's role, she did pretty good for showing up on the day filming started, and not having ANY time to study her quadriplegic role. If you want to sit down to a decent movie focusing on the crazy things happening in the world, without high expectations, and patience... give it a shot.

Christian Slater was excellent playing a character that was far different than any others that he previously had done. He's far from doing a Nicholson impression in this one. There are so many little things going on in the background that are important to the story. It's a movie that makes you think about everything that is happening and what is reality and what isn't. It's a film that pretty much demands a second watch to attempt to understand the actual events. It's tough to discuss them without divulging theories to the ending. I liked it a lot.

First off, Slater deserves a nomination for this role. Second, I don't know why people complain about the movie moving slow. It is an INTENSE drama and better than 90% IMO. Yes, the movie is confusing at the end. I watched the alternate endings with the director's commentary and it cleared it up. The ending is not the original ending shot. Even with the ending a bit confusing I couldn't ignor the strength of this movie. By the way, I work in IT and believe me when I say there are many idiots who are hired for different IT jobs. Plus, Slater's character doesn't show lack of intelligence necessarily in work skills but in PEOPLE skills. Watch this movie if anything just to see how great Slater can be and do yourself a favor and watch the alternate endings with commentary.
