French filmmaker Eric Rohmer begins his Tales of the Four Seasons series with A Tale of Springtime. Parisian philosophy teacher Jeanne (Anne Teyssedre) is temporarily without a place to stay as her cousin occupies her own home and she refuses to stay in her boyfriend's messy apartment while he is away. A young pianist, Natasha (Florence Darel), offers the use of her house and she accepts. After the two become friends, it is apparent there is a rivalry between Natasha and her father Igor's girlfriend, Eve. ...is really what this movie is, a ring in the trunk of a tree that tells the weather from a year gone by that we can only be spectators to but in fact we have lived over and over. I found reasons to fault this movie, the sets are shallow at times, the scenes a bit forced to move the plot along, but overall, it is just about perceptions, flawed as they always are, based on limited knowledge defined by our limited existence. Kantian. The three wishes scene may be the best in the movie. The scene with the necklace in the shoe seemed to be the lynch pin. I'd recommend it.

A young woman hopes to replace her father's girlfriend with her own friend. This is a talky film with nuanced dialogue that demands the viewer pay close attention. It builds to one of cinema's best seduction scenes.

SINCE SO MANY AMERICANS CAN'T PUT TOGETHER A SENTENCE WITHOUT THE WORDS "LIKE" AND "YOU KNOW" IT'S EASY TO SEE WHY AN INTELLECTUALLY CHALLENGING MOVIE LIKE THIS MAKES THEM FEEL LIKE THEIR HEADS WILL EXPLODE WITH THE STRANGE EXPERIENCE OF TRYING TO THINK. NOBODY'S BETTER THAN THEY ARE ARE THE GENTLY EVOLVING CHARACTER STUDY THAT, IN THE END, CAN BE QUITE DEVASTATING. AND YOU CAN HAVE SMART TALK WITHOUT TALKING A MILE A MINUTE, TOO.
