Katharine Hepburn stars as Jane Hudson, an Ohio secretary on the verge of spinsterhood. Carefully saving her money, Jane takes an extended trip to Venice, half hoping to find the romance that has always eluded her. Luck of luck, she meets handsome Renato Di Rossi (Rossano Brazzi), who sweeps her off her feet. Jane's flight on Cloud Nine comes to a flaming crash when she learns that Renato is married and the father of a large family. Picking herself up and dusting herself off, Jane is determined to keep her romance alive, and hang the consequences. She ultimately does what's best for everyone, and heads back to Ohio, wistfully clutching to the memory of the happiest summer of life. Gorgeously color-photographed on location by Jack Hildyard, Summertime was an adaptation of (and vast improvement upon) Arthur Laurents' play The Time of the Cuckoo. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

You have to remember this was filmed in 1955 and for it's time quite risque. Mostly though? The script is just an excuse for the beautiful travelogue. Here's a little trivia: There is a scene in this movie where Hepburn falls into the canal - which she did herself as she was quite atheltic even into her late years. The water in the canal caused a severe infection to her eye that shut down production for a time, and that later settled as a nasty virus in her brain putting her down for some time. She recovered but it had caused the tremor in her voice and hands that lasted the rest of her life.

There are a few Katherine Hepburn films that I truly find enjoyable to watch repeatedly and this is definitely one of them. I suppose this would be better suited as a "chic" flick or MAYBE for a mature couple to both enjoy, but anyone that can possibly relate to feeling like the 3rd wheel around other couples would appreciate and be touched by this film. I am almost always brought to tears by the ending. Very touching and relatable film.

I adore Katharine Hepburn...but I have to say this was not one of my favorite movies. To me she seemed to be playing a small, uncertain woman as opposed to her character in Bringing up Baby or many others like that where she knows what she want (or thinks she does) and is going to get it. The movie started slow and did not seem to be going anywhere. Katharine is a joy to watch and I did finish the movie, but I would not watch it a second time.
