Having only heard of Adam Neiman, but never having seen him live, this DVD gave me an opportunity to hear this remarkable pianist in a beautifully filmed, live environment. His Chopinesque timing and touch are so beautiful, his playing reminds me of Cortot, Rubinstein, Rachmaninoff, and Zimmerman combined in a unique artist. Especially of note is his timing in the two Valses and the Mazurka, and his Sonata #2 stands in a class by itself as an example of powerful, structured, linear playing. His funeral march brought tears to my eyes!
I have no idea what Ms. Christine L. might be thinking (or where she garners her music credentials), but this DVD is a revelation. Never before have I heard such elegant, thoughtful, masterful performances by a modern pianist. Neiman's conception of tempos and voicing, pedalling and rubato, vision and scope make me feel that this DVD comes as close to recreating Chopin's original intentions as any pianist has made the case for. This is a must see, including his insightful commentary. I look forward to hearing more from this amazing pianist!
What a wonderful DVD! I just rented it, and, being a pianist myself, I was skeptical that such a young artist could grasp the depth of Chopin's music. Wow, Adam Neiman blew me away. His tone is round and his timing is...magic! The production deserves a lot of credit, too. It is filmed darkly, but seriously, with no fluff and no pomp. Just pure music, pure playing. This is a video for a real connaisseur. Perhaps those ignorant audience members out there used to the superficial, sentimental, overblown performances of our current musical generation might not "get" this DVD. However, for those interested in a "real" performance of Chopin, rent this DVD! Andrea S.
