As a young couple searches desperately for their missing child, a Thai survivor whose loved ones have been swept away with the rushing waters struggles to prevent real estate developers from seizing the land that was once his village. Meanwhile, a high-profile Thai meteorologist struggles with the knowledge that his dire warnings were repeatedly ignored by officials as an Englishwoman sets out to find her missing husband and son, and an emotional British official whose faith in the system is slowly eroding in the face of tragedy. Tim Roth, Toni Collette, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sophie Okonedo, and Hugh Bonnevill star in a dramatized account of disaster that sent shockwaves rippling across not only Thailand, but the entire planet as well. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

My family and I were in Phuket when the tsunami hit. This movie accurately shows the pain, frustration and agony that the survivors felt. It also accurately shows how the Thai people helped us, foreigners, before helping their own. This film brought back a lot of painful memories but this is testament to the accuracy in its portrayal of the tragiic events. Well recommended.

Empathetic portrayal of real events that manages to steer clear of sappy overdone sentimentalism for the most part. Realistic characters coping with extreme situations that rarely appear cinematic.

Amazingly flat and uningaging movie about a enormous natural disaster. Surprising for HBO productions which are usually pretty good. This one so-so. One shining star: Toni Collette who almost singlehandedly makes it worth watching. An exceptional actress who manages to steal most movies she's in. The rest seem to be sleepwalking and the two reporters (Roth who is particularly irritating) are card board cut outs taken from about a hundred other disaster movies. Disappointing.
