After entering into a passionate affair with a much younger woman, an unhappily married man resorts to murder as a means of eliminating his wife in director Ira Sachs' period melodrama. Set in the 1940s, Marriage tells the tale of Harry (Chris Cooper) -- a man whose wife, Pat (Patricia Clarkson), only wants sex. Smitten by the beautiful Kay (Rachel McAdams) but ultra-sensitive to his wife's feelings -- so sensitive that he can't stand the thought of breaking her heart -- Harry opts to poison his wife as a means of allowing the marriage to end with her pride still intact. Harry's scheme soon goes horribly awry, however, when after revealing the plan to his best friend, Richard (Pierce Brosnan), Richard too falls in love with the ethereal young beauty and sets into motion a cunning plan all his own. A serpentine tale of murderous deception, Marriage was co-scripted by director Sachs and screenwriter Oren Moverman. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The premise of the story was off for me. May contain spoiler: Harry tells his best friend Richard that he has found love in his life, yet Richard's first thought is to see how he can steal her from him! Harry wants to kill his wife because he wants to leave her and he doesn't want her to be alone? That's a strange motive! At one point Harry makes Pat realize that he is about to leave her, and Pat begins to go into a shock and can't stop crying! But then they go on as if that never happened! And why was Pat so distraught if she was in love with someone else anyway! The killing of the Dog was too much! Only a cold blooded person with a real motive for murder would do something like that. And Harry wasn't one. I also didn't understand the part were Kay finally invites Richard to spend the night and he refuses, even though he's been after her the whole time! Finally, Kay breaks Harry's heart and Richard steals her from him, and yet they are still going to be friends!

Not my favorite movie, but entertaining enough and well worth the effort. Nice period piece with excellent sets, clothing, cars, hair, makeup and of course everyone smoked! What's not to like about suave Pierce Brosnan?

Nice period piece with excellent acting and costumes. I was disappointed as I was expecting more of a mystery and who-dunnit. I am marking it down for the story as I kept waiting for it to take off, but it didn't. But I agree with those who commented that Hollywood should take note of a movie with no violence, cursing, nudity, or crude jokes. Some of the best movies were done at a time when they used ACTING instead of all that other junk to sell movies.
