In the comedic farce Soapdish, the behind-the-scenes lives of several soap opera actors are just as melodramatic as those of their television counterparts. Sally Field stars as Celeste Talbert, the star of a declining TV show. To make matters worse, Talbert's career is thrown into turmoil when her rival, Montana Moorehead (Cathy Moriarty), tries to persuade producer David Barnes (Robert Downey Jr.) to write Talbert off the show. Smitten by Moorehead, Barnes comes up with a scheme to get Talbert off the show by hiring her niece Lori (Elisabeth Shue) and then Jeffrey (Kevin Kline), an old flame and cast member who was written out of the show 20 years prior. Soon, mayhem rules on the set as the cast and crew tangle, culminating in a special episode, broadcast live. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

"Soapdish" is a comedic romp that snowballs from the very beginning. A very good spoof of the soap opera drama and how real life can sometimes be more dramatic than fiction. It contains great performaces by the ever consistant Sally Field, Kevin Kline, and Whoopi Goldberg. It is a delight to enjoy with its various twists and turns.

I'm surprised that Soapdish isn't considered more a classic (and only given 3 stars??). It has more energy and wit than any 10 of Hollywood's recent pathetically unfunny comedies. Cathy Moriarty is perhaps (deliberately) over the top, but Sally Field as the fading soap opera star and Robert Downey Jr as the show's producer who watches helplessly as things spins out of control are dead on. Kevin Kline deservedly gets the best lines - he has an impeccable instinct for comedy. Farce is difficult, especially difficult to maintain throughout a movie, but this one does it, with a very satisfactory wrap-up. A movie that one can enjoy over and over.

This movie is a lot of fun! The actors real lives are more dramatic than the character they play. Several suprises. I guaranteed you will not be bored or disappointed. This is a movie to purchase. I absolutely LOVED it!
