I know that alot of critics hated this movie when it first came out, but I really enjoyed the film. Ebert said the charactors were self-absorbed, but I know alot of artists and they ARE self-absorbed. Peters has much empathy and some of the comic situations are hilarious.
The art level of the film was the most interesging aspect. Meaning the art that was part of the characters lives gave depth and showed off the art world in New York. Everyone's acting was very entertaining, but it is not my favorite of the Merchant and Ivory films.

I can appreciate it as a period piece with some very intriguing art performances being the real star of this show. The girl in the refridgerator/bathtub, and the drag queens certainly are memorable and Bernadette Peters is adorable.
