Member Rating:
The premise of writer-director Whitney Hamilton's period picture My Brother's War springs from a little-known historical footnote: the fact that in the Civil War, an excess of 400 young women disguised themselves as men and trekked off to the battlefront in drag. As this story opens, young Grace Kieler (Hamilton) perceives the ideological divisions in her own clan - her fiancé marches off to vie for the Union, while her brother vows to support the Confederacy. Kieler fulfills a promise to her dying father by attempting to protect her brother's life. She does so by cropping her hair short, donning her sibling's uniform, and heading off to the front lines herself, as a man. She soon finds herself drawn magnetically into the life and world of a war widow, Virginia. A romance blossoms between the two, guided by Virginia's assumption that Grace is a man; when Virginia learns the truth, the two women must confront the fact that, despite the morals and behavioral limitations of the period, their passion for one another knows no boundaries. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

The description given for this film is incorrect. The Brolins are not in this movie. This movie stars Whitney Hamilton and Dana Bennison. It is the story of a woman whose fiance fights for the north and her brother fights for the south. She dons her brothers clothing and strikes out to find him. It is about her journey to find her brother and in the search finds herself and her true love. It is a story of how war affects everyone and is simply a waste of humans. War is indeed hell. It is also a story of oppressing ones own identity in order to fit into society. Funny how not much has changed since 1862. Some people still live their lives in oppression while trying desperately to please society by living a false life. The film indeed has poor audio and is clearly an independent film without blockbuster money. If you are a homophobe this movie is not for you.

This movie is mislabled so the description is not what the DVD is. And what the DVD is, is a ridiculous, poor quality filming, story about a woman who becomes a civil war soldier. A potentially very interesting story to tell, but the poor quality makes it too difficult to watch. Don't waste your time!

Please see "RB"'s review for a good summary of the movie and the issues it confronts which are very timely. Personally I thought this portrayal of a true story of a brother and sister (disguised as a boy) during the Civil War is an excellent indie effort and a very good watch. Whitney Hamilton does an amazing job as the movie's producer, editor, director and star.
