There is no such thing as a bad Buddy Rich performance. I find it hard to believe there has ever been a person on this planet that exudes cool to the extent of Buddy Rich. The band in this recording is tighter than a frogs backside. As I watched the performance, my expression ranged from a wide smile to a slack jaw in awe of the unparalleled musicianship of Buddy Rich and his band. It simply does not get better than this. My dad took me to see Buddy Rich during this era and even as an easily distracted and exceptionally rambunctious 10-year-old, I distinctly remember sitting silent and stunned as I watched the master in a golden back-lit blur of motion...like I said, it doesn't get any better.
This video reminds one how great a drummer Buddy Rich was. What a talent! The band behind him is great as well. Fantastic solos all around. Buddy's solo at the end is fantastic. I sat down and watched this TWICE without even getting up. Highly recommended for even the most lukewarm jazz fan.
