The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe (1991)
Member Rating:
This filmed version of Lily Tomlin's successful one-woman performance piece is sometimes classified as a "documentary." However, it is one hundred percent from the show and contains nothing but that show, so it could also be classified simply as a comedy/satire. In any case, it features classic characters limned by this versatile performer, whose uncanny sketches predated those by Whoopi Goldberg, Tracy Ullman or Sandra Bernhard -- all of whom walk in her footsteps. One of the repeating themes of the show is the avuncular advice of a delightfully addled bag lady who offers her services to help non-Earth aliens understand what they are seeing on this planet. All the skits tie together under the general theme of making fun of high-toned New Age rhetoric, which is a system of beliefs that proves inadequate to address the fundamental woes of everyday life. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Actually, far from a great film in terms of technique – arbitrarily cross cutting between Lily Tomlin on stage, without costumes or sets (oddly, also without an audience, but with over the top sound effects) and her playing the same characters in costumes and on sets (some naturalistic, some stylized). For me it was a clunky and distracting approach. However, the writing is so great and Tomlin"s performance as her different characters is so memorable, that even a damaged version of this amazing one-woman showis better than none, by a long shot.

A brilliant filmed version of Lily Tomlin's one-woman stage production. Tomlin is a genius at bringing to vivid life her many characters and the script, written by her life-partner, Jane Wagner provides a brilliant vehicle for Tomlin to demonstrate her remarkable range and intelligence, her compassion and heart. This is unique performance by an American treasure and all-around comic genius. It's not for all tastes, but if you're looking for something truly special to watch and/or you love Lily Tomlin, I highly, highly recommend you see this movie. It's nothing less than a poetic and bittersweet and comedic riff on humanity seen through the unique lens of the Tomlin's characters and experiences over the past half-century or so. A marvelous film and the only thing better would have been to see her performance live on stage. See it and enjoy.
