While at first glance this might be taken as just a mystery or crime story, a closer look reveals it to be a stunning psychological study of loss. Kim Stanley, regretably, didn't make many films but she won a Oscar nomination for this role and it's well deserved. Myra claims to be a psychic and pushes her weakling husband (Richard Attenborough) into a scheme involving kidnapping and ransom. We are told their son, whom Myra claims to talk to, is dead. But it's not until the final few minutes of the film, which builds slowly but deliberately, that we learn why Myra and her husband are the way they are. The twist is akin to one in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and lends Myra's bone-chilling descent into madness a certain poignance.

Slow paced but enjoyable. Interesting b/w film that holds your attention with strong acting skills, great dialogue, and good sets. If you enjoy an old fashion b/w mystery with a bit of the occult then you will enjoy this little film as I did. Richard Attenborough portrays an interesting character. .

This is an interesting story about a crooked medium who concocts a scheme, with her mousy husband, to kidnap a child in order to showcase her "powers" of clairvoyance to find the kidnapped child; and then in turn become rich and famous. Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough are very good in the part of the husband and wife team who try to pull this scheme off.
