Member Rating:
This box set contains the three films Daimajin, Return of Daimajin, and Wrath of Daimajin. Each is presented in transfers that preserve the original theatrical aspect ratio. The soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Mono and have been recorded in the original Japanese. English subtitles are accessible. There are few supplemental materials beyond trailers. This is a great set for fans of Japanese cinema and horror enthusiasts, but there is little here for the average DVD consumer. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

The Daimajin movies are best described as a cross between a jidaigeki and a kaiju movie. So if you like Samurai movies and Godzilla movies, check these out. In the first Daimajin movie a warlord is warned not to upset a stone giant. He ignores the warnings and launches a surprise attack against the sleeping giant thinking he can destroy it. Instead, the giant awakes and unleashes its wrath against the samurai, including the village and the villagers. Hnh. Sounds familiar... A little slow in getting there, but the last 20 minutes is some of the best rampaging in any kaiju movie. The 2nd movie ups the action of all non-Daimajin scenes, but the end rampage of the giant lacks the pure meanness of the first. Different from the first, Daimajin is no longer an indiscriminate vengeful spirit, but a protector of its followers. In fact, Daimajin isn't even referred to as Daimajin, but "Kami-sama."
