David Lynch fans will be happy to see some of his early films finally on DVD in The Short Films of David Lynch. The films featured on this disc include: Six Men Getting Sick, The Alphabet, The Amputee, The Cowboy and the Frenchman, The Grandmother, and Lumiere. Each of these transfers are very different in terms of quality. All are featured in 1.33:1 full-frame while The Amputee is featured in 1.78:1 non-anamorphic widescreen. Because these are early works on a low budget, it's not surprising to find most of them to be in only fair shape (grain, scratches, and some soft or muted colors abound). Some pictures end up looking better than others due to age or wear and tear of the film. The soundtrack is presented in PCM English 2.0 Mono in English. Once again, the age and low-budget nature of these films assures the viewer that the soundtracks aren't going to be very good. While most of the dialogue, effects, and music are fairly clean and audible, overall, these mixes lack any true fidelity or range. No alternate soundtracks or subtitles are included on this disc. The disc is packaged with an art box that includes a 14-page photo book. Each film is proceeded by an introduction by Lynch and includes an optimizer to calibrate TV sets. While the video and audio quality of these films may not be great, fans will still delight in getting a glimpse at a major filmmaking talent's early works. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
