S*P*Y*S (1974)
Member Rating:
In 1974, flanked by such filmic monuments to paranoia and corruption as Chinatown and The Parallax View, Elliott Gould and Donald Sutherland tried to re-create the screwball nonchalance of their earlier M*A*S*H performances in this lightweight spy spoof, directed by Irvin Kershner. Gould and Sutherland play two CIA agents -- Griff and Bruland -- who are marked for death by their own agency after botching the defection of a Russian ballet dancer (Michael Petrovich). As they repeatedly mess up their assignments and wriggle out of tight corners, they not only find themselves pursued by the CIA, but also by the KGB, the Chinese Communists, and a terrorist group that wants to destroy the CIA. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Why isn't the title "SPIES"? So it would be 4 letters like M A S H! Why the asterisks between the letters? So it would look like M*A*S*H! They obviously wanted to ride the success of M*A*S*H (1970) in this screwball spy spoof. There are some similarities - the nonchalant humor mixed with slapstick against the backdrop of danger. But S*P*Y*S is pretentious and over-the-top goofy where M*A*S*H was sincere and funny. I enjoyed Gould and Sutherland in both movies and I'm glad I saw S*P*Y*S once. I thought it was quite funny in places and just silly in others. Beware: Jerry Goldsmith composed the worst soundtrack I have ever heard for S*P*Y*S. Really ugly musical sounds that make your ears want to close.
