Lloyd Kaufman's Make Your Own Damn Movie [5 Discs]

Lloyd Kaufman's Make Your Own Damn Movie [5 Discs] ()
Member Rating:
In a career spanning four decades, Lloyd Kaufman of Troma Team Pictures has been making low-budget movies that have been able to compete for space on multiplex screens and video-store shelves alongside expensive Hollywood blockbusters, and he's proved that the independent filmmaker with a small bankroll can succeed under the right circumstances. Now Kaufman shares his secrets in Make Your Own Damn Movie, an instructional DVD box set that serves as an audio-visual companion to his book of the same name. Kaufman breaks down the basics of writing a script, raising money, finding a cast, setting up production, putting your project on film, editing and preparing it for release, distributing to theaters and film festivals, and much more. Joining Kaufman are a number of other noted filmmakers who've risen from the independent ranks, including George A. Romero (Dawn of the Dead), Trey Parker and Matt Stone (South Park), John G. Avildsen (Rocky), John Badham (Saturday Night Fever), Herschell Gordon Lewis (Blood Feast), Larry Cohen (It's Alive!), and more. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

If you're a fan of Troma, this series is a must-see. Rare movies (including Lloyd Kaufman's first film), behind the scenes clips, dress rehearsals, tips on what not to do, visits to multiple indie sets, and a bunch of acting by Lloyd himself. This series has tons of guest appearances by everyone you'd expect, and tons of others you'd never expect (or even heard of). There's even a rare interview with Pam from the TV show "The Office," back when she made her directorial debut (last film she'll ever direct). A must watch for any fan of Troma or independent art in general.

In immortalized words from the book Cheaper By the Dozen, "Not of general interest!" This series of videos seems to be an attempt to redeem a ton of behind the scenes footage, private senseless conversations and annecdotal diatribes that renders the viewer searching, endlessly, for value and coming up so short that it nearly makes you wish you could have your time back. If this series is good for anything, then it is a laundry list of how not to make movies. Like the quality of this series, even his staff feel like the director Lloyd Kaufman is a bit of a joke. Even though hands on experience or just proximity to a real production is deemed more valuable than book knowledge when it comes to learning to make a movie, if you have a choice between watching this series and reading a book on film making... go read a book!
