Dallas-based filmmaker Israel Luna tackles a controversial subject matter with irreverent bite in this comedy about five gay friends who receive an invitation to an orgy and find themselves resorting to petty infighting while preparing for the rigorous "screening" process required to partake in the upcoming carnal carnival. This film's strength lies in its exploration of the effects of sexuality on the identities and interpersonal relationships of its five core characters. Had it not delved beneath the surface to address its characters flaws and vulnerabilities, this film might be more shallow just like the gay men who are stereotyped as such.

Badly shot, badly acted and badly scripted "R U invited?" attempts to touch on almost every type of homosexual situation there is and fails miserably. Scenes that are supposed to be witty/catty (ala All About Eve) sound like nails on a blackboard, scenes of touching drama make "7th Heaven" look like Shakespeare and the "OMG! They're actaully showing frontal nudity"...big whoop-dee-doo. As a gay man I wasn't so much insulted by any of the topics spoken of (because they are valid and worth exploring whether we as a sub-culture admit it or not) but, as a film afficiando, it's a slap on the face. Being an independent film and, i'm sure low budget, are no excuses for no imagination...in the camera shots, the directing of the actors, the music , the writing and the editing (which maybe a good cutter could have interlaced the scenes better instead of feeling like I was watching a play shot on video.) I wonder which revision they shot...or did they even bother to?

It's not a great film but a lot is here to be seen. The movie raises many issues of gay men ...monogamy, weight, age, appearance, drug usage and promiscuity. The acting can be cheesy at times...but the underlining issues can get you thinking and talking.
