Return to Oz (1985)

Return to Oz (1985)
Member Rating:
This '80s follow-up to The Wizard of Oz is based upon two of L. Frank Baum's later Oz books. In Return to Oz (a version that may be a bit too scary for young children), Auntie Em sends Dorothy to a sanitarium where hopefully she will clear her head from all of the "Oz nonsense." This doesn't work, for soon Dorothy manages to return to Oz, but things have definitely changed. She finds her old friends turned to stone and discovers that the awful Nome King has taken over Oz. ~ Rovi

Don't let your little 3 year old watch this movie it'll scare them. If you like OZ it's an interesting continuation but very very dark. I love it just because it's dark. Just use some personal judgement when thinking about showing this at a slumber party.

In the way only 80's movies can be entertaining, this movie delivers. Although it is much darker and creepier then the original Wizard of Oz, this movie has a heart as well. Don't be surprised if you find yourself laughing at times, since, albeit unintentional, this movie can be quite hilarious. For example, the Gnome King's terrible fear of chickens or the hilarious and yet creepy characters the Wheelers. I watched this movie with some friends and we had a great time. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes movies that don't take themselves too seriously, and who have a good sense of humor and imagination.

Only those whose knowledge of Oz goes back to the original source, that being the 14 Oz books written by L. Frank Baum in the early 20th Century, will enjoy this movie. It has nothing to do with the 1939 musical, as it is based on the 2nd and 3rd books in the Oz series.
