This Canadian TV series is filled with funny, sad, wonderful moments. The three seasons depict the ups and downs of a Shakespearean theatre loosely based on the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario. You don't have to be familiar with Shakespeare or backstage life, but it does add to your enjoyment if you are. The writing, acting and direction are all terrific, and clearly all involved have a deep understanding of, and a love-hate relationship to, the world of professional classical theatre today.

This is a show about a group of theatre people - generally putting on Shakespeare plays and you don't have to like or understand Shakespeare to enjoy this. This show (specifically Paul Gross who plays Geoffrey Tennant) allows you to feel the joy, passion, fear, thrills, excitement, anxiety etc. of theatre actors. Geoffrey, Ellen & Oliver were best friends and actors together. Geof/Ellen madly in love, Oliver the gay friend. Oliver/Ellen knocked boots and the Geof had a breakdown. Yrs later Oliver is killed and Geof is hired to fill in and direct cast incl Ellen. And Geof sees and speaks with dead Oliver. Excellent performances by Paul Gross and Rachel McAdams (Kate). If you have the slightest interest in theatre this show WILL pull you in and you will come back for more. Good stuff! Well written. Though Martha Burns (Ellen) is too old for her part I think and her coloring is too washed out. And Geoffrey always seems to be in the same outfit. Still...it's a good show!
