Il Re Pastore

Il Re Pastore ()
Member Rating:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's 1775 opera Il Re Pastore interweaves two narratives, each dramatizing an unrequited love: that of the shepherd king Aminta for the blue-blooded Elisa, and that of Agenore -- a nobleman -- for Tamiri, the child of a dethroned despot. At the conclusion, Mozart has Alexander the Great appear and resolve both conflicts. John Cox mounted and directed the 1989 production at Salzburg, Austria's Landestheater. The production includes Angela Maria Blasi as Aminta, Iris Vermillion as Tamiri, Claes H. Ahnsjö as Agenore, Sylvia McNair as Elisa, and Jerry Hadley as Alexander the Great. The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, conducted by Sir Neville Mariner, provides musical accompaniment. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

The DVD that I received is a different production of this opera. The notes on this page refer to the production entitled, "Il Mozart, Vol. 22: Il Re Pastore." This DVD is a modern dress production from the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble, conducted by Thomas Hengelbrock. It is a deligtful take on Mozart's early opera seria.
