This comment is primarily aimed at John E's comments. First of all the events in the movie did take place. If you do a little research you would know that some of the character's in the movie are composite characters but this fact does not detract from the accuracy of the events portrayed. As a side note. If historical accurracy was really something to strive for, then no one would be a mormon. The book of mormon is full of historical problems, however this movie does not try to expose the falsehood of mormonism. It simply is telling the story of a true event.

Very good movie, but not for the faint of heart. Almost everything Brigham Young says is quoted word for word from the Journal of Discourses from the mormon church which I think is a little ironic :). I don't understand why Mormons get so upset over it - the movie is to tell a story and entertain; it's no more "anti-mormon" than the movie Pearl Harbor is "anti-Japanese." They have a violent history just like every religion does.

How much of the story is truth or fiction, who really knows? But the movie is still a good watch if you like the time period and midwest/west when people were moving to different destinations. Some of the historical content seemed a bit far-fetched, and some of the fanatical religious behaviors may have been over-exaggerated. My mother and I enjoyed the movie and thought it was not fantastic, but somewhere between good and fair.
